Since the beginning of June, the media has been actively spreading information about the cholera outbreak in some regions of Ukraine. The Ministry of Health conducted its own investigation and reported on the results.

The Chief State Sanitary Officer of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin stated that for the last few weeks the department’s specialists have been analyzing data obtained from people with intestinal infections and from water bodies.
Since the beginning of the summer, more than 440 patients with acute intestinal infections have been examined, including 165 for cholera infection. Also, 6 healthy people were examined for prophylactic purposes. In addition, samples of environmental objects were studied, including almost 100 samples of fresh water, 9 samples of seawater and 80 samples of wastewater. Vibrio cholerae was not detected in any case
The Ministry of Health also notes that this information is relevant for “peaceful" regions of the country. It is almost impossible to conduct such surveys in areas where active hostilities are taking place or in the occupied territories. It is noted that in these regions there is a high probability of spreading infectious diseases. This is due to the mixing of sewage with drinking water and groundwater, which occurs due to the destruction of infrastructure.
Summer is a good time to spread acute intestinal infections. These include dysentery, salmonellosis, rotavirus infection, established and unidentified etiology. These diseases are characterized by a high frequency of complications, which in some cases are immediately life-threatening. That is why it is important to follow the basic rules of personal hygiene, use of safe water, thorough heat treatment of food, etc.
It will be recalled that we recently wrote about how doctors work in wartime fighting for every life..
